The Broadsword and the Beast is the tenth studio album by British rock band Jethro Tull , released in 1982. The album was recorded in the band's home studio and produced by Ian Anderson and Terry Ellis. The album reached number 12 on the UK Albums Chart and was awarded a Silver Certificate by the British Phonographic Industry. The album spawned two singles, "Beastie" and "The Clasp". The Broadsword and the Beast is a concept album that tells the story of a young man's journey from boyhood to manhood. The album is divided into two parts, with the first half focusing on a young man's journey and the second half focusing on his homecoming. The album is rock and folk and features a mixture of acoustic and electric instruments. Critics have praised the album, with AllMusic, for example, awarding it four and a half stars out of a possible five. The album was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.
