Po dokončení nahrávání na konci roku 1971 vydali Deep Purple 25. března 1972 desku Machine Head. Šestá řadová deska skupiny se okamžitě dostala na první místo britské hitparády a v ní se udržela několik týdnů, mimo jiné díky singlům "Never Before", "Lazy" a "Highway Star". Ve Spojených státech se Machine Head dařilo spíše pomalu, mimo jiné proto, že skladba "Smoke on the Water" vyšla jako singl až v květnu 1973. Píseň se stala nejúspěšnějším americkým singlem skupiny Purple (v Billboardu se umístila na 4. místě, stejně jako "Hush" z roku 1968) a posunula mateřské album na 7. místo. Celkově strávili Machine Head v amerických hitparádách více než dva roky, zatímco Deep Purple se stali hardrockovými těžkotonážníky známými po celém světě.
