In 1968, this record was released by a band that was then known only to insiders, who had gained a modest reputation on the island for their live performances and attracted attention with an unusual line-up, for where else in rock music was there a flute? The debut of the first incarnation of Jethro Tull (Ian Anderson now says: We were a little blues band) sounded sensational and exciting at the time. Even today - 46 years later - this record still has its charm, although it was really part of the blues boom of the time. However, you can hear the genius of the later era in songs like "My Sunday Feeling" (still a classic in concert), "Serenade To A Cuckoo" or of course especially "A Song For Jeffrey" (played by the Stones' Rock `n`Roll Circus). In addition to the ubiquitous flute sounds, the instrumental performances of Glenn Cornick on bass and drummer Clive Bunker are also worth mentioning. Mick Abrahams, the band's excellent guitarist, was still as focused here as a leader (even co-writer and singer) alongside Ian Anderson, but parted ways after this record because he and Anderson couldn't agree on a new direction (more folk influences, richer instrumentation, greater musical range). The breakthrough album from the already released box set This Was (50th Anniversary Edition).
