Album se v roce 1971 vyšplhalo na třetí místo britské albové hitparády.

"Pictures At An Exhibition" was originally released in 1971, after the band recorded it live at Newcastle City Hall in the same year. It features a reinterpretation of Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky's piano cycle "Pictures At An Exhibition" and an encore of "Nutrocker" - Kim Vincent Fowley's rendition of a rock version of the march of the tin soldiers from Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker". The album reached number three on the UK album chart in 1971.

The album is a live recording of the band's performance of Modest Mussorgsky's composition of the same name and other songs by the band. Pictures at an Exhibition was the band's first album and its only release on Atlantic Records. The album was recorded at the Lyceum Theatre in London in December 1970. Pictures at an Exhibition was praised by critics and fans alike. Bruce Eder of AllMusic called the album "a classic of progressive rock". Pictures at an Exhibition was remastered and re-released in 1996 as part of the band's box set The Return of the Manticore.
