One of the most important bands in music history , The Beatles, will release a reissue of their famous album Abbey Road on September 27. The iconic photograph of the band crossing a zebra crossing was taken by photographer Ian Macmillan exactly 50 years ago on 27 September. Macmillan, balancing on a ladder a short distance from the Abbey Road crossing where the now famous recording studios of the same name are located, captured just six photographs, with the fifth chosen for the album cover. AlthoughAbbey Road was not the band's last album, as Let It Be was released a year later in 1970, it was the last album on which all the band members - John Lennon, Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney and George Harrison - still worked together. Abbey Road, which debuted at number one in the UK and US charts, where it stayed for 17 weeks, went on to press millions of copies, earning the record a Grammy Hall of Fame induction in 1995 for a record of unflagging quality and historical significance, and the album remains the band's best-selling studio album to this day. The image from the album cover has become one of the most famous photographs, and the iconic crosswalk is frequented by thousands of the band's fans each year. The studios were renamed Abbey Road Studi os from the original EMI Recording Studios and became the most famous recording studios in the world. All seventeen tracks were newly mixed by producer Giles Martin - son of legendary producer George Martin, who worked with the Beatles from the very beginning. "The magic comes from the hands that play the instruments, the blending of the Beatles' voices, the beauty of the arrangements," comments Martin on the reissue. "Our job was just to make sure everything sounded as fresh and grabbed you as intensely as the day the songs were first recorded." The core set of songs is supplemented by 23 studio and demo recordings, most of which have not been previously released. The album features hits such as Come Together, Here Comes The Sun, Oh! Darling or Octopus's Garden. Deluxe editions of the album include a book with commentary by Paul McCartney, Beatles historian Kevin Howlett, liner notes for each of the songs, an essay by music publicist David Hepworth reflecting on the album's influence, previously unreleased photographs, most of which were captured by Linda McCartney, handwritten lyrics, Beatles correspondence, contemporary publicity leaflets and much more.
