After the epochal "Close To The Edge" album, Yes could only have collapsed, but barely twelve months had passed and a wonderful triple live LP had been released in between, and they were on the carpet with a new, equally ambitious work of genius. Instead of three tracks ranging from nine to nineteen minutes, Tales From Topographic Oceans offers four long tracks (all around twenty minutes), each of which takes up an entire side of the double-album format and contains enough musical potential to help a less ambitious band overcome ten years of creative starvation. But Yes juggle their flashes of genius as if they were something quite ordinary. Without making commercial concessions to the mainstream market, they defy all familiar rock schemas for 80 minutes and set to music a beautiful, philosophical, emotional story based primarily on Jon Anderson's meditation experiences in India. The result is a harmonious, cohesive unity that, for the length of time they've been playing, is probably unparalleled in a progressive genre where long songs are not exactly in short supply.
