Any band that has managed to make a bit of an impact with their debut will at some point face the big question, "What about the second album?". Toughen up? Become softer? Experiment more or less? Even a band as exceptional as King Crimson once found themselves at this crossroads after the release of the super-album "In the Court of the Crimson King". Like many before and after them, they nearly broke up because of this challenge. Greg Lake, as well as Michael and Peter Giles, have since left the group. However, Robert Fripp, who is still a great stalwart of the band today, was determined to carry on and brought his old colleagues back into the studio as session musicians, along with Gordon Haskett and Keith Tippett, who also appeared on later albums. In terms of personnel policy, King Crimson soon set new standards. The crucial question remains, however, what will such a tight-knit band do with a difficult second album? Here they proved to be not as creative as in personnel matters, but just as effective. Fripp's slogan became the solution: keep going! In many ways, "In the Wake of Poseidon" is a remake of "In the Court of the Crimson King." "Images of the City" is the new "Schizoid Man," "Cadence and Cascade" is the new "I Talk to the Wind," and so on. However, none of the tracks are copies of its predecessor, King Crimson manages to keep the standards high and add something here and there. The best example: cat food. A wild and unbridled blend of blues, rock, jazz and dada with a piano performance by Keith Tippett for the ages. Many fans prefer "In the Wake of Poseidon" to "In the Court of the Crimson King" for that reason alone, and they shouldn't be the only ones pleased that Robert Fripp and Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree) have now reworked the band's second Crimson album from 1970 as part of the band's 40th anniversary. The structure of the reworked CD/DVD-A edition parallels previous King Crimson anniversary editions: you can listen to the album both in its original mix and in a brand new mix created for this edition. Fripp and Wilson used the original multi-track tapes for this. The exception is "Devil's Triangle", whose recordings have been lost over the years. The various versions of the album can also be enjoyed in 5.1 surround format; owners of the DVD-Audio player also have the so-called Lossless Stereo and Lossless Surround formats available. So once again, we may be interested to see how the pair of producers catapult Crimson's sound from the 1970s into the 1990s. Of course, the new release of "In the Wake of Poseidon" also includes alternate versions of songs from the album and a new mix of "Groon", which was the B-side of the "Cat Food" single at the time.
