Radiohead's complex sonic artistry For many people, "A Moon Shaped Pool" will be considered Radiohead's best album of all time. At least for a while. Because the British five-piece around frontman Thom Yorke can't even get past their two music-historical monuments "OK Computer" and "Kid A" in the long run with their ninth LPm. Still, it's an excellent album that should rightfully appear on almost any serious best-of list towards the end of the year. There's a reason for that: rarely has so many musical styles (alternative, electronica, ambient, classical, chamber music, choirs, jazz, folk, etc.) been brought together so seamlessly as on the new album from the Oxfordshire indie legend. The means employed are entirely in the service of the usual first-class songwriting. Radiohead have pulled off the incredible feat of never slipping into bombast despite their best efforts, but instead their new songs sound and feel minimal and organic. They open the door to new listeners. Above all, the amazing fluidity of the album contributes to this: Despite the stylistic diversity and the supposed breaks between songs, (almost) everything is in the right place here - from the opening "Burn The Witch" with its punchy string arrangements to ethereal numbers like "Daydreaming," "Decks Dark" and "Desert Island Disk" to the wistfully conciliatory piano closing ballad "True Love Waits." Everything flows. The electronic-driven, rather energetic interludes "Ful Stop" and "Identikit" act as points of contrast, yet fit seamlessly into the overall picture. The brilliantly arranged build-ups add the necessary variety and tension to this overall very relaxed musical journey at just the right moment. Multi-instrumentalist Jonny Greenwood's recent experience as an Oscar-winning soundtrack composer is evident throughout. It's only in the somewhat weaker last third of the new album that the exceptional English musicians suddenly want too much of a good thing, and therefore stumble a little. "The Numbers" in particular bursts at the seams and makes it seem like you're accidentally listening to three tracks at once. But that's a matter of taste, of course. Especially when "A Moon Shaped Pool" changes with every listen. The songs seem to grow, evolve, and reveal new aspects, nuances, and layers - and the deeper you delve into the dynamic, labyrinthine, and ultimately lyrical-cryptic inner life of this complex sonic work, the more enchanted you become. And the more it touches you emotionally. This is probably the album's greatest strength: It won't leave you cold. Only great art can do that, and it's safe to assume that Radiohead have figured something out. Without having to reinvent themselves, Radiohead have unveiled an excellent, multi-layered new album after a five-year hiatus, "A Moon Shaped Pool," which needs some time to fully develop. With this album, Thom Yorke and co. impressively confirmed their status as one of the most important bands of the last three decades.
Album spans genres Rock, Electronic, Indie Rock and Art Rock. 180g Optimal Pressing Vinyl.
