Album available on vinyl (LP EP), CD and DVD in total 11 editions. Nirvana's third and final studio album In Utero was released on September 13, 1993. The album was produced by Steve Albini, who had previously worked with the Pixies and PJ Harvey. In Utero was a departure from the previous album Nevermind, which was produced by Butch Vig. The album's title was inspired by a poem written by Courtney Love. The album cover was designed by Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love. The first single from the album, the track "Heart-Shaped Box", was released on August 18, 1993. The album's second single, "All Apologies", was released on December 7, 1993. The album In Utero received mixed reviews from critics. However, the album was commercially successful and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart. The album was certified platinum five times by the RIAA. In Utero is considered a classic album and is often included on lists of the best albums of all time. Album spans genres Rock, Alternative rock, Grunge and Noise Rock.

After Nirvana returned honest rock'n'roll to the top of the charts in 1991 with "Nevermind," "In Utero" became the final statement of the most amazing, if contradictory, rock'n'roll band of the era - from the opening, quasi-unhinged melodies of "Serve The Servants" to the bittersweet closing notes of "All Apologies." Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl have come to terms with an image as spokesmen for the grunge generation that took them themselves by surprise. "In Utero" is many things, wrote David Fricke in Rolling Stone when the album came out, "Brilliant, searing, angry and thoughtful, mostly all at once. But above all, it's a triumph of strong will." Nirvana's (unwanted) swan song is now playing out beautifully on the 20th anniversary of the release of "In Utero."
