By 1976, David Bowie was at his commercial peak, especially in the United States, where three studio albums and one double live album (including STATION TO STATION, which reached number three) had reached the top ten within two years. Personally, however, he was at rock bottom - heavily addicted to cocaine, tired of the limelight and with serious doubts about his mental state. The two immersed themselves in German avant-garde music and the early minimalist recordings of former Roxy Music member Brian Eno, and began writing and recording music that would eventually appear on five remarkable albums - two by Pop (THE IDIOT and LUST FOR LIFE) and three by Bowie - known as his "Berlin Trilogy" (LOW, HEROES and LODGER). 1977's LOW is Bowie's first album from this period and one of his best. Produced by Bowie and Tony Visconti (with assistance from Eno), LOW transformed the singer's pain and alienation into an album of moody, fractured beauty. The first side is full of experimentation and new musical possibilities, though Bowie's lyrics reflect a less positive attitude. The instrumental "Speed of Life" opens the side with distorted synths layered over clean synths and a more-than-heavy backbeat. There's a lot going on here - headphones are an absolute necessity to take it all in. The intricate bass work in "Breaking Glass" supports the odd scene described in the lyrics ("Baby / I've been / Breaking glass in your room again"), just as the guitar figure in "Sound and Vision" provides a boost, while the lyrics ("Pale blinds drawn all day / Nothing to do, nothing to say") bring it all back. The second side, which is largely instrumental, turns Bowie's despair and alienation into something beautiful. The highlight is the haunting "Warszawa," a song meant to evoke the deserted streets of postwar Poland. Inspired by a recording of a Bulgarian boys' choir singing a Polish folk song, Eno created a multi-layered piece in which he experimented with texture and structure, shaping the modulating chords into a remarkable melancholic whole. This long stretch of ambient music segues into Bowie - many Bowies, a virtual choir whose voice alternates between low and high registers - singing the words in a made-up language. "Weeping Wall" has a similar effect - a multitude of synths and percussion slide around a lone guitar, creating a hypnotic sonic foundation. Bowie's voice is again inserted into the machine, emerging as a distorted reflection of himself. The song is literally all Bowie - he plays every instrument, every note, composing it piece by piece from his own imagination and curiosity. This curiosity helped Bowie, Eno and Visconti create two more albums of beauty and intensity during Bowie's stay in Berlin. LOW was the first salvo in this collaboration, a bold statement that set his work on a new path.
Album spans genres Rock, Electronic, Art Rock, Experimental and Ambient. 180g Remaster 2017 Remastered Profile Leaflet Vinyl.
