Close to the Edge is an album by the progressive rock band Yes , released in 1972. It is their third studio album and is considered a groundbreaking album in the progressive rock genre. The album was recorded at Morgan Studios in London and produced by the band and Eddie Offord. The album has been described as "a three-part suite that expanded the boundaries of rock music". The first part, "The Solid Time of Change", is a six-minute instrumental track featuring Rick Wakeman soloing on a Moog synthesizer. The second part, "Total Mass Retain", is a nine-minute track with lyrics by Jon Anderson. The third and final part, "I Get Up, I Get Down", is a ten-minute song with lyrics by Anderson and Chris Squire. The album was a commercial and critical success, reaching number three on the UK Albums Chart and number four on the US Billboard 200. It was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. In 2003, the album was ranked #95 on Rolling Stone magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
