This reggae compilation revisits Jamaican drummer Sly Dunbar, who, along with bassist Robbie Shakespeare, formed the Riddim Twins and has been involved with the group since the 1970s on an immeasurable number of albums. A modest estimate puts the number of recordings at 40,000! In 1975 Sly & Robbie formed the rhythm section of the prominent formation The Revolutionaries, which was predominantly Channel One's house band. Bunny Lee's studio - along with Joe Gibbs' studio - was considered Kingston's hit factory at the time. Not the least of these was the rocking beat perfected by Sly & Robbie, which replaced the "one drop" style prevalent up to that time. The rocker, also known as the stepper, is dominated by double snare hits on the open snare. After the Riddim Twins celebrated international success with the song "Walk And Don't Look Back" for Mick Jagger and Peter Tosh, many reggae artists began to copy this more mechanical, military style. "Jamaican Rockers 1975-1979" features songs by Cornell Campbell, Dennis Brown, Johnny Clarke, I Roy, Ben Sherman and Leroy Smart, among others, all recorded in Bunny Lee's studio using the inimitable rocker beat.
