The album was produced by John Porter and recorded at RAK Studios from January to February 1987. It was the only album by the band to feature new drummer Mike Joyce. The album was well received by music critics. John Robinson of the NME gave the album a score of nine out of ten, calling it "a magnificent album" and "The Smiths at the peak of their powers". He went on to say that the album was "the equivalent of The Queen Is Dead". In a retrospective review, Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic gave the album five stars out of five, calling it "an album that is as good as anything the Smiths have ever done".
