This week marks fifty years since Neil Young released his second solo album, and perhaps more importantly, it was his first album with the acclaimed backing band Crazy Horse. The album EVERYBODY KNOWS THIS IS NOWHERE, which Young co-produced with David Briggs at Hollywood's Wally Heider Recording studio, became the musical blueprint for Young's solo career, if such a blueprint can be said of a man with an experimental past. It's powerful, raw and emotional, full of songs that became a staple of Young's work and influenced more than a generation of American and country rock artists. EVERYBODY KNOWS THIS IS NOWHERE may only consist of three songs, but they are all classics, starting with "Cinnamon Girl" followed by the title track. This is followed by "Round & Round (It Won't Be Long)" and the first side closes with "Down by the River". If you do the math, you'll find that there are only three songs left to fill up side two, but it's safe to say that "The Losing End (When You're On)", "Running Dry (Requiem for the Rockets)" and "Cowgirl in the Sand" fill it up with no problem. EVERYBODY KNOWS THIS IS NOWHERE is not a happy album, but oddly enough, it's an album that's perfect to listen to when you're feeling blue. That's because it doesn't depress you further, it just reminds you that other people have been where you are now, and that you can get there too.
