In 1979, Neil Young and Crazy Horse released an album that answered the question: "When is a live album not a live album?". The answer: when you record live and then do everything you can to remove the noise that usually accompanies a live performance. Speaking of a live album, we must first leave aside the tracks "Pocahontas" and "Sail Away", which Young recorded in 1975 during the recording of the 1978 album "Comes a Time". When you consider the length of time that elapsed between the recording and the album's release, you might understand why Young was so reluctant to promote this particular album. In 1979, he told Cameron Crowe in an interview with Rolling Stone, "I hear it on the radio and it sounds nice, but I'm somewhere else now. I like rock 'n' roll." Young embarked on a tour he called "Rust Never Sleeps" (a phrase he heard from members of the band Devo), and decided that after the relative quiet of his last few albums, it was time to return to rock'n'roll. The material on "Rust Never Sleeps" was recorded at various times and places between 1978 and was shamelessly manipulated, with many additional edits, but it hardly mattered: Young spoke openly about the sonic changes, and critics liked the material too much to care about the alterations made in the studio. The final two tracks of "My My, Hey Hey" - opening with "Out of the Blue" and closing with "Into the Black" - are both absolutely great, but the material in between is almost as strong, which is why the album regularly appears on best-song charts... not just of the '70s, but of all time. Yes, it's that good. The soundtrack to the concert film Rust Never Sleeps is out now in a reissue on vinyl.
