The Songs of Distant Earth is an album by Mike Oldfield , released in 1994. It is a concept album based on the novel of the same name by Arthur C. Clark. The album was Oldfield's first studio album in six years and was recorded in his home studio in Ireland. The album was a critical and commercial success, reaching number one in the UK and number two in Germany. The album went platinum in the UK and Germany. The album features Oldfield on guitars, keyboards and vocals, with his brother Terry Oldfield playing flute in the backing band. The album features a mix of new and old songs with Oldfield's signature guitar and keyboard solos. The album's title track was released as a single and went to number one in the UK. Other singles released from the album were "To France" and "Let There Be Light". The album was nominated for the Mercury Prize in 1994.
