The Songs of Distant Earth is Mike Oldfield's sixteenth album, released in 1994. It is based on the science fiction novel Songs of Distant Earth by Arthur C. Clark. A concept album of a special kind, the 1994 work is based on a short story by Arthur C. Clark. First published as a short story in 1958, Clark picked up the idea again in 1983, edited it until 1985, and made it into a full book in 1986. Arthur C. Clark belongs to a group of SiFi authors who place importance on scientific knowledge and consider gondoling through space at warp 9 to be fantasy. And so he weaves a tale in which the sun of our world is about to be destroyed by an explosion, and with it, humanity. Huge spaceships are built, equipped with everything the future settlers will need. Man is unable to reach the speed of light, even a fraction of it at the beginning. Travel through interstellar space to the nearest habitable planet takes centuries afterwards..... Oldfield embarked on an extremely spherical science fiction journey in 1994, and based on the - extremely readable - book by Arthur C. Clark's flawless album Chill Out / New Age. This album isn't so much a soundtrack as a soundtrack to the emotions associated with the underlying story; subtly and very harmoniously, the music lets the listener drift and quickly captivates. Even if you haven't read the novel, this transformation into music can captivate you even today.
