Kiss is an American rock band formed in New York City in January 1973 by Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Peter Criss and Ace Frehley. The band went through several lineup changes, with Stanley and Simmons remaining the only original members. The original and best-known line-up consisted of Stanley (vocals and rhythm guitar), Simmons (vocals and bass guitar), Frehley (solo guitar and vocals) and Criss (drums and vocals). Kiss released their self-titled debut album in February 1974. The album was commercially successful and charted at number 87 on the Billboard 200. The album received a gold certificate from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for shipping 500,000 copies in the United States. Kiss released four singles from the album: "Deuce", "Strutter", "Cold Gin" and "Rock and Roll All Nite". Kiss was well received by music critics. Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic gave the album four stars out of five, calling it a "solid debut". He praised the band's "brisk energy" and "fierce guitar work".
