War Child was the band's eighth studio album and was released as a double album. The album was a commercial and critical success, reaching number one in the UK and number twelve in the US. The album was certified platinum by the RIAA. The first half of the album consists of rock songs, while the second half consists of acoustic songs. The album's title track, "War Child", is a protest song about the Vietnam War. The song was inspired by the death of Anderson's friend.
