The crowd favourite Songs From The Wood was considered the first part of the band's folk-rock trilogy (followed by Heavy Horses and Stormwatch). The album was recorded right after the tour for the previous album Too Old to Rock 'n' Roll: Too Young to Die! (1976), and showed Anderson's desire to change the band's musical style as he became familiar with the folk-rock scene and even produced it - in 1974 Anderson produced the song "Now We Are Six" for Steeleye Span. The album heralded a new direction for the band, which focused on celebrating British pagan folklore and rural life in a broad folk-rock style that combined traditional instruments and melodies with hard rock drums and electric guitars. The album is considered the first of a trio of folk-rock albums: Songs from the Wood, Heavy Horses (1978) and Stormwatch (1979). The album cover features the extended title, "Jethro Tull - with kitchen prose, rhymes and dives - Songs from the Wood". The album's title track contains two of these phrases in the lyrics. Advertisements in British music newspapers read, "Jethro Tull present 'Songs From The Wood'. New album Old Magic. Songs From The Wood. It's inspired by the idea that nature might not be as kind as we'd like to think. Its theme is the natural and supernatural inhabitants of the woods of old England.
