Lock Up the Wolves is the fifth studio album by American heavy metal band Dio , released on May 22, 1990. It was the band's first album with singer Tony Martin, who replaced Ronnie James Dio after he left the band to join Black Sabbath. The album was produced by Martin, Dio and guitarist Jeff Pilson. The album reached number 47 on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for shipping 500,000 copies in the United States. The album spawned two singles, "Lock Up the Wolves" and "Hey Angel". The critical reception of Lock Up the Wolves was mixed. Eduardo Rivadavia of AllMusic gave the album three stars out of five, calling it "a competent but ultimately uninspiring hard rock album". He criticized Martin's vocals, which he said "lack the power and range of Ronnie James Dio ", but praised Pilson's guitar work, calling it "the real highlight of the album". The album Lock Up the Wolves cited several heavy metal bands as influences, including Avenged Sevenfold and Trivium.
