"Babylon By Bus" is a live double album recorded mostly during a series of three concerts in June 1978 at the Pavillon de Paris with a capacity of 10,000 spectators. While the Wailers were primarily a vehicle for Marley's vocals and songwriting genius, Babylon By Bus provided a unique opportunity to showcase the musicianship of the best reggae band in the world. The unrivalled rhythm section - Aston and Carlton Barrett on bass and drums respectively - has remained unchanged since 1970. They were unchanging, unchanging and immeasurable in their contribution, forming the foundation upon which the band's performances were built. Reggae music, with its non-intuitive rhythmic structure where the downbeat appears on the first and third beats (as opposed to the ubiquitous second and fourth "backbeat" in rock and pop), is defined by groove. And from the upbeat "Positive Vibration" on the first side to the grand, roaring, extended finale "Jamming" at the end of side four, the Barretts delivered a stylish sequence of powerful, thunderous yet nimble grooves that have been the foundation of the Wailers' best work.
