Sebastian Duron

Sebastian Duron

Spanish Baroque Composer and Organist

Sebastián Durón (1660–1716) was a prominent Spanish composer during the Baroque period, known for his significant contributions to the development of theatrical and vocal music in Spain. He served as the maestro de capilla (music director) at several cathedrals and was eventually appointed to the Royal Chapel of King Charles II in Madrid. Durón's compositions include a variety of zarzuelas, operas, cantatas, and liturgical works. His music is characterized by its melodic inventiveness and the integration of Spanish folk elements with Italian and French styles, which were popular during his time. Despite his success, Durón's career was affected by political turmoil; he was exiled to France following the War of the Spanish Succession due to his support for the Habsburg claimant to the Spanish throne. His works have been revived in modern times, with recordings and performances showcasing his contribution to early Spanish opera and religious music.
