The album was recorded during the band's tour in support of Close to the Edge and features performances of songs from that album and from previous albums. Yes Songs was commercially successful, reaching number 3 on the UK Albums Chart and number 8 on the US Billboard 200. The album was praised by critics, who called it "a masterpiece" and "one of the best live albums ever made".
