A year of musical and social change. 1968 was a pivotal year for British rock music. It began with psychedelic influences that were picked up and developed by pioneering artists such as Pretty Things, Tomorrow, Incredible String Band, Idle Race, Traffic and The Move. From jazz, blues, folk and other styles, "progressive" forms such as folk rock and hard rock evolved. The common denominator for all artists was an emphasis on experimentation and a desire to push the perceived boundaries of pop music. This year also saw the release of the first records by bands that would later achieve success and change the music of the 1970s: Deep Purple, Jethro Tull, James Harvest Barclay, Genesis, Status Quo, Van Der Graaf Generator and Caravan. In addition to more well-known artists such as Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Procol Harum and Pentangle, this compilation also includes lesser-known artists and their work. This collection is a celebration of a creative period when rock music was evolving into something more serious, abandoning the single as a medium and embracing the dominance of the album.
