Sam Gopal

Sam Gopal

60s Psychedelic Rock Band with Indian Influences

Sam Gopal, also known as the Sam Gopal Dream, is a psychedelic rock band named after its founder and leader, Sam Gopal, who hails from Malaysia. The band is notable for incorporating traditional Indian music instruments, such as the tabla, into their sound, which created a unique blend of Eastern and Western psychedelic music during the late 1960s. Sam Gopal's most recognized work is the album "Escalator," released in 1969. This album is particularly famous for featuring guitarist Lemmy Kilmister, who later gained fame as the frontman of the heavy metal band Motörhead. Before joining Motörhead, Lemmy was part of Sam Gopal under the name Ian Willis and contributed to the band's distinctive sound. "Escalator" remains a cult classic within the psychedelic rock genre. After "Escalator," Sam Gopal's presence in the music scene became less prominent, but their work continues to be appreciated by fans of the era and genre.
