On both sides of the Cold War confrontation line, vibrant scenes of independent self-realisation, inspired by punk and post-punk, were developing. They put their sounds into circulation through self-distribution on cassettes. While in the West it was a DIY euphoria, in the East the subculture had no other means at its disposal. Its protagonists, disillusioned and driven by pervasive boredom, sought ways of creative self-affirmation and communication in side rooms and secluded retreats with a passion for sound, linguistic ingenuity and a passion for craft. The artifacts from that time tell of a practiced refusal to be seen and the possibility of being in power at a high level despite everything. Between exclusion and self-exclusion, idiosyncratic sounds and ways of expressing themselves emerged. "In line with the absurdity of real existence", as the lyricist and stage knot Bert Papenfuß, who together with Ronald Lippok, Bernd Jestram and Bo Kondren wrote the book "Spannung. Performance. Resilience. Magnetbanduntergrund DDR 1979-1990" (Verbrecher Verlag/ZickZack), which was published in 2006 and sold out for a long time. The experimental-electronic tracks on this CD are making their first appearance on the record market.
