Necessary in order to begin to tell the story of this music born in the Caribbean, but practiced from the south, with its own characteristics and temperature. We are talking about a marginal phenomenon: the Uruguayan INDIE label Macondo and its discography linked to the dance music scene in Montevideo in the 70s. We present a selection of the most important and best recordings made and released by Macondo between 1975 and 1979. The artists tried to imitate tropical musical styles popular in Caribbean and Central American countries such as Cuba (guaguancó, guaracha), Puerto Rico, Panama (bomba, plena, merengue) and Colombia (porro, vallenato and, of course, cumbia), but in this process of adaptation and hybridization, elements, practices and codes emerged that gave rise to a music that has its own post-territorial identity and universe.
