In addition to the fact that these new artists share a pioneering spirit in their approach to crossing musical boundaries, another theme of this album is that many of them also share a commitment to independent practices - and most of the recordings by these artists featured here are either self-released or on independent labels. While the focus of this new wave of jazz artists has so far been on London, this album shows how the movement has spread across the UK (and even beyond). "Kaleidoscope - New Spirits Known and Unknown" shows that although these artists share a common approach to music, there is a wide range of styles - from deep spiritual jazz, to electronic experimentation, punk-tinged funk, uplifting modal truthfulness, deep soul vocals and much more.
