Having long dominated the rock steady era, Arthur "Duke" Reid sought to further build his reputation as one of Jamaica's leading producers after the emergence of the new reggae sound in the late 1960s. With the release of "Gay Jamaica Independence Time" he proved that he was still capable of putting out quality tracks. The album features some of the most talented musicians of the time, including U-Roy, The Ethiopians, Alton Ellis and Tommy McCook. Duke Reid may have joined the reggae scene late, but his best material is on par with the classics of the time, and many of the tracks here easily reach that level. The LP ends with the Jamaican anthem, which was released to mark the eighth anniversary of Jamaica's independence.
