Café del Mar in Sant Antoni de Portmany, Ibiza is a way of life. A fashion club, an escape, a refuge, a parallel world to the hectic life in European metropolises. "Chillout" was a big concept in the nineties. Renowned DJs from all over the world played at the Café del Mar. It created style and set trends. A club on the beach, into the legendary sunset and out of the sunrise again. In terms of content, everything was possible here: underground house, electronic European pop music, downbeat and rave. It opened on 20 June 1980 after two years of construction, designed and decorated by Catalan architect Lluis Güell. José Padilla was a key player in the choice of music from the very beginning. Padilla was born in Barcelona, moved to Ibiza in 1975 and has played as resident DJ at Café del Mar since 1991. The first edition of the "Café del Mar" compilation series was released in 1994. Padilla is also pursuing his own mission as a musician and producer. In 2001, his second album "Navigator" was nominated for a Latin Grammy. 20 years after the release of the first compilation "Café del Mar", the first three legendary editions are being reissued with exclusive bonus tracks. "This album was lovingly compiled by José Padilla. Café del Mar, Ibiza '94" read the accompanying text of the original release. The track list was remarkable for its diversity and unity at the same time, and that love can still be felt today. Among them are Madonna's producer and Malcolm McLaren collaborator William Orbit and his Strange Cargo project, UK rave pioneers Underworld, Manchester heroes Leftfield, Andrew Weatherall's Sabres Of Paradise, Simon Jeffes' original Penguin Café Orchestra and Ibiza darlings and acid jazz founders A Man Called Adam. The second part is in no way inferior to this eclecticism. In keeping with the 1995 zeitgeist, beats are more prevalent here and suddenly everything becomes loosely funky. Silent Poets from Japan and Deadbeats from Nottingham / UK are part of the party. Roy Ayers R.A.M.P. come in with "Everybody Loves The Sunshine" from 1977, showing how generationally and sonically straddling Café Del Mar is. Paco De Lucia brings classical, world music and jazz together to chill on the beach, while D*Note bows to orchestral soul. Café del Mar is one of the most successful compilation series in the world and a living document of an era when dance was no longer limited to disco, techno, house and trance, but became an everyday phenomenon. Café Del Mar" and its first compilations were a profound foundation for this evolution in pop music.
