The album charted at number 38 in the UK Albums Chart. The album was recorded at Roundhouse Recording Studios in London in early 1978 and produced by Gerry Bron. It was the band's first album with new singer John Lawton replacing David Byron. The album's title track was released as a single in May 1978 and reached number 49 in the UK Singles Chart. The album Fallen Angel was well received by music critics. In a review for AllMusic, critic Eduardo Rivadavia called it "one of the band's most consistent and inspiring albums". The album was remastered and re-released by Sanctuary Records in 2006.
