With his second album "Heart Of Saturday Night", released in 1974, Tom Waits earned a reputation as an excellent and versatile songwriter. His blues arrangements, which often segued into jazz, were mostly based on the use of bass, drums, saxophone and, of course, piano. Producer Bones Howe, brought in by David Geffen, head of Asylum Records, was a major contributor to the recording. Howe had previously worked for artists as diverse as Elvis Presley, Ornette Coleman and Frank Sinatra. Like Howe, the studio musicians came from a wide area between pop and jazz, which clearly moved the production in the direction Waits wanted. However, it corresponded even less with the mainstream of the time than his debut, Closing Time (1973). Still, "Rolling Stone" magazine now lists the album at No. 339 on its list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time." After the release of "Heart Of Saturday Night", Waits - at the urging of his manager Herb Cohen - went on tour with Frank Zappa. Reluctantly. Audience reaction was subdued, but Waits had Zappa on his side, which earned him a good reputation among his peers.
