In fact, the album's sound is more immediate and accessible, so you can literally feel the band coming into their own. "For the last ten years, we've always wanted something and wanted to prove something," says Berninger. After nearly two years of touring for "High Violet," they could finally breathe a sigh of relief in that regard. The result is as novel as it is familiar, and is the culmination of an artistic journey that takes The National into new realms and back to their origins. Says bassist Aaron Dessner: "The new songs are on one hand the most complex, but also the most simple and human. It feels like we've found a chemistry together."
