Although some critics considered Coltrane's Ballads too light, there is nothing wrong with this album. The jazz saxophonist is doing what he always does: exploring new ways of playing with a relentless will to develop personally and artistically. On Ballads, he highlights his softer side - the path he took with Johnny Hartman and Duke Ellington. This collaboration with McCoy Tyner is neither combative nor outwardly focused. Coltrane is completely himself, sometimes predictable, and yet these are the album's strengths.
