V jeho stylu hry byly přinejmenším tři jedinečné aspekty: hrál palcem, nikdy nepoužíval trsátko... a jeho sóla téměř vždy obsahovala dva prvky, které byly běžně označovány za "nemožné" - používání oktáv a pianistických blokových akordů. Byl samouk (jeho první 'lekcí' bylo pozorné poslouchání nahrávek Charlieho Christiana) a nikdy neuměl číst noty, přesto však neomylně ovládal bluesové a baladické tempo a byl ohromným skladatelem."
