Scottish alternative rockers The Fratellis have an impressive musical record: two of their three albums to date have reached the UK Top 5, they've won a Brit Award and have rocked a sold-out Brixton Acadamy in London four times in a row. After the reunion album "We Need Medicine" (2013), the band around John Lawler aka Jon Fratelli is celebrating their debut on the Cooking Vinyl label. "Eyes Wide, Tongue Tied" is the sound of a band at the height of their freedom, a breathtaking trip, it's ... a bit like flying. After a world tour for their previous album, the Glasgow trio settled in Los Angeles to record the album with producer Tony Hoffer (who produced the Fratellis' debut, and otherwise produced M83, Depeche Mode and Belle & Sebastian). The Californian sunshine does them all three audibly well, you can even hear borrowings from the 70s Californian sound, rockabilly, Americana and country. The de-luxe CD version includes seven bonus tracks; the 180g vinyl comes with a download code. Review: "Stylistically, too, it ventures into previously uncharted territory, from the sky-high riffs of Stevie Wonder's '70s soul and austere funk horn sections to the Beatles of the late '80s."
