The album was produced by the band's founder Robert Smith together with Mike Hedges. The album was recorded at Morgan Studios in London, England with Hedges and mixed at AIR Studios in London. The album was released to mixed reviews, but was commercially successful in the United Kingdom, reaching number 20 on the UK Albums Chart. The album was awarded a UK Phonographic Industry Gold Certificate for selling over 100,000 copies. The album spawned three singles, "Killing an Arab", "Boys Don't Cry" and "Jumping Someone Else's Train". The Cure : Three Imaginary Boys is a post-punk album that blends gothic rock and new wave.
