The eleven songs have won numerous awards and honors. The Joshua Tree peaked at No. 7 on the US album chart and reached No. 1 three weeks later, making it the first U2 album to reach No. 1 in the United States. In 1999, The Joshua Tree earned the RIAA's highest certification - Diamond - with 10 million units sold. The album also reached #1 on the British, Canadian, West German, Dutch and Australian charts. In Switzerland, the album reached number one on the charts and stayed there for a total of 33 weeks. The album and its cover art also came first in Rolling Stone magazine's annual music awards as voted by readers. Rolling Stone's critics voted it the second album of the year.
