The album was certified quadruple platinum by the RIAA and sold more than 10 million copies worldwide. Ten Summoner's Tales was praised by music critics upon its release. Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic called the album "a loose, eclectic collection of pop songs" and praised the songwriting and vocal performances of Sting . He concluded that it is "an album that is both easy to like and hard to define, and that is one of its greatest charms". The album was also praised by Rolling Stone magazine, which called it "a rich and soulful record". Ten Summoner's Tales was a commercial success, reaching number one in the UK and the United States.
