Monster is the seventh studio album by American alternative rock band R.E.M. , released on October 25, 1994 by Warner Bros. Records. The album was produced by Scott Litt and R.E.M. and was recorded between March and August 1994 at Crossover Sound Studios in Atlanta, Georgia. The album Monster debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, selling 179,000 copies in its first week of release. The album was certified quadruple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for shipping four million copies in the United States. The Monster album spawned four singles, "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?", "Bang and Blame", "I Don't Sleep, I Dream" and "Strange Currents". Monster received mixed reviews from music critics. Some praised the album for its loud and aggressive sound, while others criticized it for being a departure from the band's earlier work. Monster was included on several lists of the best albums of 1994.
