In Time - The Best of R.E.M. 1988-2003 is the second official compilation album by R.E.M. The album was released in 2003 and features tracks from albums recorded at Warner Bros. Records, from 1988's Green to 2001's Reveal, as well as two newly recorded songs and one song from the film's soundtrack. Bad Day was written in 1986, while Bill Berry was still in the band, but the final version was not completed until the In Time album. Animal was originally written for the following studio album. Similarly, All The Right Friends was written in the early 1980s and not recorded by the band until the 2001 Cameron Crowe film Vanilla Sky. The Great Beyond was released in 1999 on the soundtrack to Miloš Forman's film Man on the Moon and became R.E.M.'s biggest hit in the UK, reaching number three in the charts.The album In Time - The Best of R.E.M. 1988-2003 was also released in a special limited edition two-disc set, featuring rarities and B-sides from the same period. The single-disc edition reached number one in the UK and number eight in the US charts and was certified gold. The two-disc edition ranked 16th in the US and 37th in the UK.
