Mother's Milk is the fourth studio album by American rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers , released on August 16, 1989. The album was produced by Rick Rubin and was recorded at The Mansion in Hollywood, California from March to May 1989. It was the band's first album released on Warner Bros. Records. Mother's Milk reached number 52 on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for shipping one million copies in the United States. The album spawned four singles, "Knock Me Down", "Higher Ground", "Under the Bridge" and "Give It Away". Mother's Milk received widespread critical acclaim and is now considered one of the band's best albums. Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic called it "a great album that captures the band at its peak" in a retrospective review. The album was re-released on August 25, 2009 as part of the "Deluxe Edition" series.
