Forty-one-year-old Englishwoman Polly Jean Harvey is the most distinctive alternative singer and musician of her generation. Although she is most influenced by the blues, she constantly tries to change her sound on her albums - from rock, pop, electronica to a more contemporary form of quirky, slightly chilling folk. She has received seven BRIT Awards nominations, was awarded the Mercury Prize in 2001, received five Grammy nominations and additional Mercury Prize nominations. Although the songs on her eighth studio album, Let England Shake, were written three years ago, they took on a uniquely mature form with last year's recording. Recorded with regular collaborator John Parish, Mick Harvey (ex-Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds) and drummer Jean Marc-Butty, who accompanies PJ Harvey with his voice, the twelve songs are a masterpiece that Q magazine awarded the maximum five stars and Mojo four out of five. Let England Shake, with its commentary on the state of contemporary Britain, is the first essential album of 2011 and PJ Harvey's best to date.
