Pretty Hate Machine is the debut studio album by American industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails , released on October 20, 1989 by TVT Records. The album was produced by frontman Trent Reznor and Flood. After recording the album at Reznor's home studio in Cleveland, Ohio, the band self-released it in limited quantities and with little promotion. The album was met with mixed reviews, but gained fans in the underground music scene. In 1993, after the release of their major label debut The Downward Spiral, TVT Records re-released Pretty Hate Machine on CD, which earned them a platinum record in the United States. The album was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and sold more than three million copies worldwide. Pretty Hate Machine is cited as a seminal release in the industrial rock genre and as one of the most important albums of the 1990s.
