Hesitation Marks is the seventh studio album by American industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails , released on September 3, 2013 by Columbia Records. It was the band's first album in five years, following 2008's The Slip. The album was produced by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross and was recorded from February to June 2013 at various locations. The title and album artwork were revealed on July 22, 2013. The title is derived from the lyrics of the song All Time Low. The cover art is by Russell Mills, who also did the cover art for 1994's The Downward Spiral. Mills described the concept for the cover as "a journey from darkness to light" and stated that he "tried to create a sense of hope and rebirth". The album received universally positive reviews from music critics. On Metacritic, which assigns a standardized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 73, a "generally favorable rating" based on 22 reviews.
