Mike Oldfield has always played Celtic/Irish/Welsh/Scottish pieces, whether traditional, variations on them or integrating them into his own compositions. This is evident on every album, especially Ommadawn and Incantations, but also in all parts of Tubular Bells. In keeping with typical tradition, he therefore had almost the entire Oldfield family and village community perform as a choir on the early albums. "The Voyager" (along with the wonderfully spherical "Songs of Distant Earth") is certainly a brilliant highlight of this development. The album contains ten instrumental tracks, four of which he wrote himself, the others being traditional Irish tunes. Some of them, such as "Women of Ireland", are well known outside Ireland. Stanley Kubrick used this song in his film "Barry Lyndon". Kate Bush sang it as "Mna na h'Eireann" (Irish: Women of Ireland). This album cannot be compared to other more classic and rockier Oldfield albums, here it is the folk elements that give the album its hallmark. He never got distracted and always did what he was supposed to do, and that's a good thing.
