The album is a concept album based on the Greek legend of the god Poseidon. The album opens with the epic track "The Court Of The Crimson King", which is a reworking of a song from the band's debut album. The song is a classic of progressive rock and is one of the most famous songs in King Crimson's catalogue. The album contains several other classic prog rock tracks, including "Pictures Of A City", "In The Wake Of Poseidon" and "The Devil's Triangle".
