Released in 1981, "Discipline" was a surprise reinvention with a new lineup and radically different material that thrilled fans, confounded critics and brought in a huge number of new listeners. Even thirty years later, "Discipline" remains one of the seminal albums of the 1980s and one of King Crimson's most beloved albums. The new quartet of Robert Fripp, Adrian Belew (ex-Zappa, Bowie, Talking Heads) and Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel) quickly established themselves as a powerful touring force. Long songs from the '60s and early '70s and extensive improvisation in live performances were enhanced by a minimalist aesthetic through a series of short and tight compositions that featured intricate and interwoven guitar lines, Belew's signature vocals, Bruford's new arsenal of electronic percussion, and Levin's fluid bass lines and Chapman's drumstick.
