Herbert Jeffrey "Herbie" Hancock (born April 12, 1940 in Chicago, Illinois) is an American Academy Award and Grammy Award-winning jazz pianist and composer. Hancock's improvisation is characterized by a sparkling "funky" style of playing and the use of distinctive cross rhythms. Many of his compositions have become classics and serve as a basis for improvisation for other jazz musicians. Mwandishi is one of Herbie Hancock's first departures from his traditional jazz sound. On this album, which was recorded in a single take on New Year's Eve, he crosses genre boundaries. Unlike his earlier works, he gives space to electronic effects, expanding his musical expression. Hancock's sextet is the most accomplished ensemble he has ever played with. With this work he opens new doors for jazz music as a whole.
